Starts next week. This looks interesting especially with the 2 strong leads.
https://www.sky.com/watch/the-day-of-the-jackal
The Day of the Jackal launches exclusively on Sky Atlantic and NOW on November 7, 2024.
The Day of the Jackal is a brand new thriller based on the classic 1971 book by Frederick Forsyth about a lone wolf and his global scale threat.
The official synopsis, from Sky, reads:
“An unrivalled and highly elusive lone assassin, the Jackal, makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee. But following his latest kill, he meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer who starts to track down the Jackal in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake.”
With a fresh twist on the source material, including the subsequent award-winning 1973 film from Universal Pictures, The Day of the Jackal promises a chase across the world as the hunter becomes the hunted.
The series will run for 10 episodes.

"Fresh twist" aka "We made it suck".
Redmayne looks like a boy playing dress-up and probably always will.

AKA we hijacked the title of a famous film/book to help sell a generic thriller plot.

I just watched the 1973 movie only last week ., I doubt it will be anywhere near as good as the classic movie

A fresh twist, so set in the 00s and different target.
I'll give it ago I like Eddie. They did a remake of the film in the 90s, think it was the 90s and it was crap.

It's the same (overall) plot; just a little more 'up-to-date' with other stuff in there. I doubt they would be allowed to use the title for a completely different plot.

Who is he aiming to assassinate? I'm guessing it's not Charles De Gaulle this time.

It's a contemporary fictional character I believe. The series is getting some good reviews.

Condor was a contemporary series based on a 70's film and I thought that was pretty good.
I'll certainly give this a go.

First season was brilliant. The second sucked balls.

I'm not a fan of Eddie Redmayne but I'll give the first episode a look.

Its being stripped over 5 episodes on one evening, is that a good sign or not?

The 1973 film was so good because of its minimalism and attention to the plot: a n enigmatic and highly regarded assasin being paid a huge amount of money to assasinate Charles de Gaulle. There were no car chases, massive shoot outs, martial arts style fights( except when The Jackal kills the forger with his bare hands) or pointless sex scanes, it was about how The Jackal acquires a weapon, an identity, plots the assasination, and his fate at the end.

This review from the Guardian didn't enthuse me:
"... Lashana Lynch’s Bianca is a wonderful foil. A slightly annoying co-worker at MI6, a stretched-too-thin mum at home, ..."

Yeah. I don't know why they have to bring families into it. That's partly why I loved "The Bill". It was all about the job.
Will probably watch at least the first episode though.

It’s this modern idea you have to have a back story or family motivation for a character and their traits.
Why the original was so great. You had no idea who The Jackal was or what motivated him apart from the money. Then great ending as it throws out who was he as the person they thought he was turns up in the flat. So a completely anonymous cypher.

To be fair, that wouldn't be too difficult

Didn't Jack Black appear in that version as an unlikely arms dealer?

The original film was great because of the cast & plot which makes it still tense thriller that has a charm to it, their is hardly any dialog the last 20 minutes of the original film either as they focus on the Liberation Day Parade.
There is very little backstory to the Jackal, other than the rumour that he was involved in the assassination of a president from Caribbean Island
